1.)Input rectifier

  • The AC input from mains is first rectified in the SMPS using a rectifier to convert it into DC.
  • The rectifier consists of a full wave diode bridge or module that produces an unregulated DC voltage to the Smoothing capacitor.
  • The input AC passing into the rectifier has AC voltage pulses that may reduce the power factor. So control techniques are used to force the average input current to follow the sine wave

2.)Inverter

  • This stage converts the rectified DC into AC using a power oscillator.
  • The power oscillator has a small output transformer with a few windings at 20-100 kHz. A MOSFET amplifier controls switching.

3.)Voltage converter

  • This stage has a high-frequency transformer and the inverted AC drives its primary windings.
  • This creates the up and down voltage at the output. If DC is required, the output AC is converted to DC using a rectifier circuit using Silicon diodes or Schottky diodes.
  • The rectified output DC is then filtered using the filter section consisting of inductors and capacitors.

4.)Output regulator

  • The output stage always monitors the output voltage by comparing it with a reference voltage using a feedback system.
  • In some SMPS, Open loop regulation is used without a feedback circuit and constant voltage is fed to the transformer input.

  2. AF gain
  3. Power buck
  4. RF gain

Answer (Detailed Solution Below)

Option 1 : High efficiency

Switch Mode Power Supply Question 5 Detailed Solution

The correct answer is option 1.

Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS)

  • A switched-mode power supply (SMPS) is an electronic circuit that converts power using switching devices that are turned on and off at high frequencies, and storage components such as inductors or capacitors to supply power when the switching device is in its non-conduction state.
  • SMPS takes AC mains input and provides DC output (3.3V to 12V).
  • Switching power supplies have high efficiency and are widely used in a variety of electronic equipment, including computers and other sensitive equipment requiring stable and efficient power supply.
  • The input DC supply from a rectifier or battery is fed to the inverter where it is turned on and off at high frequencies of between 20 KHz and 200 KHz by switching MOSFET or power transistors.
  • The high-frequency voltage pulses from the inverter are fed to the transformer's primary winding, and the secondary AC output is rectified and smoothed to produce the required DC voltages.
  • A feedback circuit monitors the output voltage and instructs the control circuit to adjust the duty cycle to maintain the output at the desired level.

What is the frequency of a switching power supply oscillator? ›

Frequencies between 20kHz to 150kHz

They are generally designed to operate between 20kHz and 150kHz due to silicon's characteristics, as well as EMI standards.

What is the range of frequency in power supply? ›

The two main power frequencies used across the globe are 50Hz or 60Hz (Hertz), and the majority of countries favour a 50Hz frequency for their mains supply, though there are still a significant number of countries using a 60Hz supply.

Can switch mode power supply charge a battery? ›

The output voltage is maintained constant, but the output current is left fluctuating depending on load conditions, which means it cannot be used as a battery charger until you achieve constant current.

Which is better switch mode power supply or linear power supply? ›

A linear power supply achieves this by reducing the voltage of an incoming alternating current (AC) using a transformer, then rectifying and smoothing it. In contrast, a switching power supply rectifies and smooths the voltage before regulating it using a high-frequency pulse train.

What is the operation of switch mode power supply? ›

Working Principle of SMPS Power Supply

It can increase or decrease the output voltage to maintain a constant output regardless of changes in load. This dual ability gives it an advantage over linear regulators, which can only regulate the output down (that is, they can only decrease the voltage, not increase it).

Why use a switching power supply? ›

Switching power supplies are designed for high efficiency and small size. They incorporate a switching regulator to convert electrical power efficiently. Switching DC power supplies regulate the output voltage through a process called pulse width modulation (PWM).

How does SMPS convert AC to DC? ›

In general, an SMPS initially converts the ac source voltage into a dc voltage through a rectifier and an input filter. Then a chopper “chops up” the dc voltage, so that a voltage composed of a series of square-wave high-frequency pulses (20 kHz–10 MHz) can be generated at the input of the transformer primary winding.

What is the switch on power supply? ›

Every computer today uses a power button for turning on and off a computer. However, many desktop computer power supplies also have a power switch, as shown in the picture. This power switch turns on and off the power supply, and if set to the off position, the power button for the computer does not work.

What is power supply mode? ›

Power Supply function, known alternatively in the aftermarket as Maintainer mode, Supply mode and Steady Power mode, essentially maintains a specific electrical system voltage to provide an environment to perform another task, such as a diagnostic, repair or maintenance function.

What is the power on switch? ›

A power switch is a device that allows you to turn an electronic device on or off. It's like a toggle switch that controls the flow of electrical power to the device. When the switch is in the "on" position, it completes the circuit and allows electricity to flow, powering up the device.

What is a switching mode power supply PoE? ›

A PoE switch is a device that combines the functionality of a switch and a power source in one. It has multiple Ethernet ports that can be used to connect other devices, such as VoIP phones, wireless access points, and IP cameras.
