Hi. Should the chicken be cooked first?

  3. Momma Cyd says:

The chicken is not cooked first. Just dice it up and then it cooks for 6 hours on low.

i did 3 cut potatoes on bottom then cut up 4 boneless sickness chicken breasts into cubes put that on top of the potatoes seasoned with 1/2 tsp of garlic n onion powder, 1/4 tsp of pepper then i added 3 cut up bacon srrips and then added in 1 can of cheese soup and half the shredded cheddar cheese and then i added in 1 cup of milk ... put the other 3 potatoes i cut up on top and seasoned again with 1/2 tsp of onion n garlic powder, then added the other 3 bacon stirps i cut up then added 1 can of cheese soup and topped with rest of shredded cheddar cheese then i added in 2 cups of heavy whipping cream and 1 more cup of milk cause i was a bit worried wouldn't be enough liquid cooking now on high... i'm just hoping i didn't add too much liquid lol I crockpot a lot and know a cup of liquid will not do n cook everything... i always do 2 cups of liquid to all my recipes and it comes out delicious but i was worried today cause heavy whipping cream is an agent that thickens everything and i wanted a cheese creamy kinda sauce... after the chicken and shredded cheese pouring in a cup of whole milk that cheese kinda soaked it up pretty quickly aslo why i wanted to make sure had enough liquid so it all cooks but still comes out creamy cheese deliciousness so we shall see when it's all done tonight ..... thanks for sharing your recipe... this is the first time i'm cooking this kinda meal... I can't wait to see how it comes out tonight :^)

  8. K M Stearns says:

Can this be frozen uncooked and if so, how long to cook from frozen?

  9. Patty says:

Sounds delicious! How would I cook this in a 9x13 in the oven if I didn't have a slow cooker or IP?

  10. Momma Cyd says:

You will want to look into this before freezing. Potatoes don't do as well. You should really only freeze cooked or partially cooked potatoes, as raw potatoes contain a lot of water. This water freezes and, when thawed, makes the potatoes mushy and grainy.

FAQs

Do you have to brown chicken before putting in slow cooker? ›

"Browning, or caramelizing, meat before putting it into a slow cooker isn't 100 percent necessary, but it is well worth the effort for the most flavorful and full-bodied end result," he says. "The caramelized surface of the meat will lend rich flavor and color to the finished dish."

The direct heat from the pot, lengthy cooking time and steam created from the tightly covered container destroys bacteria, making slow cooking safe. You can put frozen chicken in a slow cooker, too!

Can I use casserole packet mix in slow cooker? ›

If you like to use the pre-made casserole packet mixes which consist of herbs and spices and usually a thickener like flour, these can be used in the slow cooker. Aside from accidentally overcooking the meals, the most common reason we see for tough, rubbery, or overdone chicken is customers using a Crockpot that is far too big.

Should you rinse chicken before putting in crockpot? ›

Put simply, if you wash raw chicken, you are cross-contaminating your kitchen. Yes, fresh fruit and vegetables should be washed with cold water before preparation, but raw poultry should not. Don't worry: Properly cooking chicken will destroy any pathogens. In fact, it is the only way to destroy those pathogens.

Does chicken need to be submerged in slow cooker? ›

Water or liquid is necessary to create steam. When cooking meat or poultry, the water or liquid level should cover the ingredients to ensure effective heat transfer throughout the crock. Some manufacturers of slow cookers recommend adding liquid to fill the stoneware 1/2 to 3/4 full.

Is it better to cook chicken on high or low in the crockpot? ›

We found that the only way to cook chicken (and turkey) in a slow cooker is on the low setting and for a relatively short amount of time.

Do you need to add water to slow cooker when cooking chicken? ›

Chicken stock, low-sodium chicken broth, or water: I prefer chicken stock or low-sodium chicken broth if I have it on hand because it adds a little more flavor, but water works equally well. Adding some liquid to the slow cooker is an essential step, and ensures that the chicken is tender and juicy.

How do you keep chicken from drying out in a slow cooker? ›

Add liquid such as chicken broth, water, or citrus juice to keep the chicken moist. The liquid provides necessary moisture during the cooking process, preventing the chicken from drying out and becoming tough. Chicken broth, for instance, not only keeps the meat moist but also adds flavor to the dish.

Can I use jars of sauce in a slow cooker? ›

We've been there, too, and have just the answer you've been looking for. These slow cooker dinners come together with just two ingredients — a protein and a jar of store-bought sauce — and rely on the slow cooker to do all the heavy lifting. Just drop everything in and let the slow cooker do the rest.

Can I use Reynolds oven bags in my crockpot? ›

Can you use oven bags in a slow cooker? We do not recommend it. Try Reynolds Kitchens® Slow Cooker Liners. They were specifically developed and sized for use in slow cookers, while Reynolds Kitchens® Oven Bags were designed and sized to hold large cuts of meat for pan-roasting in the oven.

What is the best way to thicken casserole in slow cooker? ›

Cornstarch, potato starch, and chickpea flour are a couple of pantry-friendly ways to thicken soups, stews, and sauces in the slow cooker. Just a tablespoon or two of any — added towards the end of cooking — will thicken sauces especially well.

Why is my crockpot chicken mushy? ›

Mushy, mealy, stringy chicken, which is sometimes the result of cooking low and slow for an extended period of time. I've learned this the hard way, after many attempts at cooking chicken in the crockpot on a workday, for 8 plus hours at a time.

Why does chicken get watery in crockpot? ›

This moist environment allows you to leave food to cook for hours without risking it drying out. But because there is no evaporation, the liquid isn't able to reduce and thicken naturally in a slow cooker, often resulting in watery sauces and loose gravies.

Does chicken get more tender the longer you slow cook it? ›

Yes, chicken breast will get softer the longer you cook it. However, if you cook it for too long, it will become dry and tough. The best way to ensure that the chicken breast stays juicy and tender is to cook it until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.

What happens if you don't brown chicken before cooking? ›

Browning first isn't always necessary for moist, flavorful meat. By omitting the searing that's common to many chicken recipes, Ali Slagle's braised chicken and greens yields moist and flavorful meat.

Can you put meat in slow cooker without browning? ›

You do not need to brown meat before you place it into the slow cooker. By browning meat, you will cause the meat to intensify the flavor. That will make the meat taste so much better. By adding onions, carrots & celery, that will also help to flavor the meat taste.

Is it better to brown the meat before putting in a slow cooker? ›

Browning Is Better

You should always brown ground beef or any ground meat in a skillet before adding it to your slow cooker to prevent the meat from clumping up or from adding excess grease to your cooked dish.

Is it safe to put raw meat in a slow cooker? ›

Raw Meat. Technically you can cook raw meat in a slow cooker, but it's tricky and requires a bit of preparation in order for it to be really worth it. If you simply pop some raw meat in your slow cooker, it won't have a chance to brown, which adds some much-needed flavor and cuts down on plenty of unappealing grease.
