Fried Rice Variations

The great thing about making fried rice is that there are so many ways that you can change it up. Some of my favorite variations are:

Switch up the meat:You can swap your chicken for tofu, shrimp, pork, or beef.

Switch up the veggies:If you want to add in veggies, be sure to try edamame, green beans, snow peas, bean sprouts, or even water chestnuts.

Make it gluten-free:Making this dish gluten-free is super easy, all you have to do is use a gluten-free soy sauce.

Make it spicy:Feel free to add red pepper flakes, chili paste, or a dash of sriracha to make your rice a little spicier.

What do I need to make this PF Chang's Chicken Fried Rice Recipe?

Long-grain Rice:Using long-grain rice or jasmine rice for your PF Chang's fried rice brings the "Chinese food" feel to your dish. I recommend making the rice the night before, putting it in the fridge for the night, and then making your fried rice the next day. This will dry out the rice a little bit.

Vegetable Oil:Vegetable oil is used to cook eggs and vegetables and to keep them from sticking to the pan. Using oil will also help them crisp up. You can use olive oil or canola oil as well.

Eggs:Adding whole eggs to your rice adds extra protein and flavor.

Garlic:Minced garlic brings a pungent, nutty flavor to your rice. I prefer to use freshly minced garlic or garlic in a jar for a quicker option.

Salt and White Pepper:I like to season my rice with only salt and pepper because you add many different ingredients with strong, savory flavors.

Ginger:Using minced ginger in this recipe brings a warm and spicy flavor to your rice. It also helps give that authentic fried rice flavor.

Vegetables:I use onions, carrots, and peas in my rice. You're welcome to add any other vegetables or switch it up a little. These are just the authentic PF Chang's vegetables in the recipe. Adding edamame would be a great addition that adds even more protein.

Scallions:Adding green onion when cooking your chicken breast creates a savory and almost peppery flavor.

Chicken Breast:I like to use boneless skinless chicken breast. You will need to cook your chicken breast before starting this recipe. You can use thighs or natural frozen chicken.

Soy Sauce:Soy sauce brings a salty, umami flavor to your sauce. It adds a savory flavor with just a hint of sweetness.

Sesame Oil:Sesame seed oil gives this dish an earthy, savory flavor. Be sure not to use too much sesame oil, which is very strong and can overpower your other flavors.

Molasses:Adding molasses to your chicken fried rice sauce is perfect for adding a sweet and smoky flavor while also creating the perfect consistency.

To make the plain rice:

  1. Cook the rice according to package instructions and chill it in the refrigerator for a few hours or overnight. This will dry out the rice a little bit, giving it the perfect restaurant-style texture.

To make the fried rice:

  1. In a large non-stick skillet or wok, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the beaten eggs with a little salt and pepper, and cook until set, stirring occasionally. Remove the eggs from the pan and set aside.

Your leftover PF Chang's can be refrigerated for leftovers later in the week or put in the freezer for a convenient frozen food meal. To refrigerate, make sure your rice is completely cooled, and then place it in an airtight container for up to four days. How do I reheat my leftovers?

It's super easy! Just place your leftover rice into a microwave-safe bowl for about 2 minutes. You can also put it in a skillet and warm it up until it is completely warm, which will only take about 5 minutes. I recommend adding a tablespoon of water, chicken broth, or an ice cube when reheating your rice so it doesn't dry out.
